This question offers a choice between (a) the digestive system of the cockroach, and (b) the composition and function of lymph. Since (a) is fully answerable, it is addressed here.
The cockroach's alimentary canal runs the length of the body and is divided into three main regions:
- Foregut (Stomodaeum): begins with the mouth, opening into a muscular buccal cavity, followed by a short pharynx and a narrow oesophagus, which leads into a large sac-like crop (used for temporary storage of food) and then into the muscular gizzard (proventriculus), lined internally with chitinous teeth/plates that grind food into fine particles. The foregut is lined with cuticle (being ectodermal in origin) and mainly handles ingestion, storage and mechanical breakdown of food — no chemical digestion of consequence occurs here.
- Midgut (Mesenteron): a short tube where the actual enzymatic digestion and much of the absorption of food takes place. At the junction of the fore- and midgut, a set of finger-like blind projections called hepatic (gastric) caeca secrete digestive enzymes into the midgut and also aid absorption, effectively increasing the digestive/absorptive surface area. …
