Phylum Arthropoda, the largest animal phylum, is defined by a jointed, segmented body covered by a chitinous exoskeleton, an open circulatory system, and a ventral nerve cord — with respiratory and excretory organs varying by habitat.

(a) General characteristics of Phylum Arthropoda:

  1. Arthropoda is the largest phylum in the animal kingdom, comprising more than 80% of all known animal species (insects, crustaceans, arachnids, myriapods).
  2. The name means 'jointed foot' (arthron = joint, podos = foot) — the body bears paired, jointed appendages, adapted for walking, swimming, feeding or sensing.
  3. Animals are triploblastic, bilaterally symmetrical and metamerically segmented (the body is made of repeating segments).
  4. The body is typically differentiated into distinct regions such as head, thorax and abdomen, or a fused cephalothorax and abdomen.
  5. The body is covered by a hard, non-living, chitinous exoskeleton, secreted by the underlying epidermis. Since this exoskeleton cannot grow, it is periodically shed and replaced in a process called moulting or ecdysis, allowing the animal to increase in size.
  6. The circulatory system is open (haemocoelic): blood (haemolymph) is pumped by a dorsal, tubular heart into open spaces (haemocoel) rather than through a closed network of vessels.
  7. Respiration varies with habitat: gills in aquatic forms (e.g., prawns), tracheal tubes in most terrestrial insects, and book lungs in arachnids (e.g., spiders, scorpions).
  8. The nervous system consists of a dorsal brain (ganglia) connected to a ventral, paired, ganglionated nerve cord running along the body. …
