The central neural system (CNS) is made up of the brain and spinal cord, both protected by bone (skull and vertebral column respectively) and by three meningeal layers (duramater, arachnoid mater, piamater), and both developing from the embryonic ectoderm. The brain is organised into the forebrain (cerebrum plus diencephalon — thalamus, hypothalamus, epithalamus/pineal body), the midbrain (cerebral peduncles and the corpora quadrigemina, a reflex centre for vision/hearing), and the hindbrain (cerebellum, pons varolii, medulla oblongata). The cerebral cortex ('grey matter') carries sensory, motor and association areas across its frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital lobes, and the inner limbic system (olfactory bulbs, cingulate gyrus, mammillary body, amygdala, hippocampus, hypothalamus) governs emotion and memory.
