Atavism is the unexpected reappearance of an ancestral character after it had been genetically hidden for several intervening generations.

Also called a 'throwback' or reversion, atavism occurs when a trait characteristic of a remote ancestor -- one that has not been expressed in the recent generations of a lineage -- suddenly reappears in an individual. The genetic basis is usually that the gene(s) for the ancestral trait were never actually lost from the genome; they simply remained masked (e.g., suppressed by a dominant modifier gene, or kept recessive/unexpressed) across several generations, until a chance combination of genes (through recombination or a modifier gene becoming homozygous recessive) allows the old, ancestral trait to be expressed again.
