During transcription, RNA polymerase binds to a promoter region on the DNA, unwinds a short stretch of the double helix, and uses one strand (the template or antisense strand) to synthesise a complementary, single-stranded RNA molecule in the 5' to 3' direction, following base-pairing rules (with uracil replacing thymine as the complement of adenine). The resulting primary transcript, most commonly a messenger RNA (mRNA) when protein-coding genes are involved, carries the genetic information out of the nucleus (in eukaryotes) to the ribosomes, where it is translated into a polypeptide chain; transcription can also produce rRNA, tRNA and other non-coding RNAs.
