Hormones are biochemical signalling molecules, secreted by endocrine (ductless) glands straight into the bloodstream, that travel to and regulate specific target tissues/organs elsewhere in the body — e.g. insulin and adrenaline.

Hormones are organic compounds produced in small amounts by specialised endocrine glands (such as the pancreas, thyroid, adrenal glands, and pituitary), and unlike exocrine gland secretions, they are released directly into the bloodstream rather than through a duct. They act as chemical messengers, travelling through the blood to reach specific target cells/organs (which possess matching receptors), where they regulate physiological processes such as metabolism, growth, and reproduction, usually in very small ('trace') concentrations.
