Step 1. Fertiliser manufacture.

Sulphuric acid is a key raw material for making nitrogenous and phosphatic fertilisers such as ammonium sulphate ((NH4)2SO4) and superphosphate of lime, both essential to modern agriculture.

Step 2. Manufacture of other important acids.

Because it is a strong, high-boiling, non-volatile acid, sulphuric acid is used to displace and manufacture other acids from their salts, including hydrochloric acid (from NaCl) and nitric acid (from KNO3/NaNO3).

Step 3. Drying and dehydrating agent.

Being highly hygroscopic and having a strong affinity for water, concentrated sulphuric acid is widely used as a drying agent for gases that do not react with it, and as a dehydrating agent to remove the elements of water from organic compounds.
