Because capacitors in parallel share the same voltage, their charges add directly, giving an equivalent capacitance equal to the sum of the individual capacitances.

Working

Consider three capacitors C1C_1, C2C_2, C3C_3 connected in parallel between the same two points A and B, across which a potential difference VV is maintained (e.g. by a battery).

Since all three capacitors are connected between the same pair of points, the potential difference across each one is the same, equal to VV.

The charge stored on each capacitor:

Q1=C1V,Q2=C2V,Q3=C3VQ_1=C_1V,\qquad Q_2=C_2V,\qquad Q_3=C_3V

The total charge drawn from the source is the sum of the charges on the individual capacitors:

Q=Q1+Q2+Q3=(C1+C2+C3)VQ=Q_1+Q_2+Q_3=(C_1+C_2+C_3)V
