An analyser is essentially a polarising device used to test/analyse the state of polarisation of light. When plane-polarised light of intensity I0I_0 (polarised along a fixed direction) is incident on an analyser whose transmission axis makes angle θ\theta with that direction, the intensity of the emergent (transmitted) light is given by Malus's law:
