For two coherent sources of equal amplitude, the general formula Imax/Imin=(a1+a2)2/(a1−a2)2I_{max}/I_{min}=(a_1+a_2)^2/(a_1-a_2)^2 gives a zero minimum intensity, so the ratio is infinite — the destructive-interference points are perfectly dark.

Working

For two coherent light sources of amplitudes a1a_1 and a2a_2, superposition gives

Imax∝(a1+a2)2,Imin∝(a1−a2)2I_{max}\propto(a_1+a_2)^2,\qquad I_{min}\propto(a_1-a_2)^2

Here the two sources have equal amplitude, a1=a2=aa_1=a_2=a:

Imax∝(a+a)2=4a2I_{max}\propto(a+a)^2=4a^2

Imin∝(a−a)2=0I_{min}\propto(a-a)^2=0

Therefore:

ImaxImin=4a20→∞\dfrac{I_{max}}{I_{min}}=\dfrac{4a^2}{0}\to\infty
