Working
A Nicol prism is made from a calcite crystal cut and cemented (with Canada balsam) along a specific diagonal plane, exploiting calcite's double refraction. Unpolarised light entering the crystal splits into an ordinary (O) ray and an extraordinary (E) ray, which have different refractive indices and hence travel at different speeds. The prism's geometry and the refractive index of the Canada balsam cement are chosen so that the O-ray strikes the cemented interface beyond its critical angle and undergoes total internal reflection (and is absorbed by the blackened side of the …
