Cyclosporin A and statins are two well-known bioactive molecules of microbial origin, used respectively as an immunosuppressant and a cholesterol-lowering drug.

Micro-organisms are an important commercial source of bioactive molecules used in medicine. Cyclosporin A is produced by the fungus Trichoderma polysporum; it suppresses the immune system's rejection response and is administered to organ-transplant patients to prevent their body from rejecting the transplanted organ. Statins are produced by the yeast Monascus purpureus; they act by competitively inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is central to cholesterol biosynthesis in the liver, and so are used clinically to lower blood cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
