Step 1. At the replication fork, the two parental template strands are antiparallel, but DNA polymerase can only synthesise a new strand in the 5' to 3' direction.

Step 2. On the template strand oriented 3' to 5' in the direction the fork is opening, the new complementary strand can be built continuously in one smooth motion as the fork advances; this new strand is called the leading strand.
