The lone pair on nitrogen makes amines electron-rich, so they readily attack electrophilic centres — i.e. act as nucleophiles (and Lewis bases).

In an amine, R-NH2_2/R2_2NH/R3_3N, the nitrogen atom is sp3sp^3 hybridised and one of its four hybrid orbitals holds a lone (unshared) pair of electrons, since nitrogen uses only three of its five valence electrons to form covalent bonds with carbon/hydrogen.
