A transformer changes AC voltage levels by mutual induction between two coils wound on a common laminated iron core, with Vs/Vp=Ns/NpV_s/V_p = N_s/N_p.

Principle: A transformer works on the principle of mutual electromagnetic induction — when the current in one coil (primary) changes, the resulting changing magnetic flux links a nearby second coil (secondary) and induces an emf in it.

Construction: Two separate coils of insulated copper wire — the primary (with NpN_p turns) and the secondary (with NsN_s turns) — are wound on a common core made of soft iron, laminated (thin sheets insulated from each other) to reduce eddy-current losses. The core provides a low-reluctance path so nearly all the flux produced by the primary links the secondary. In a step-up transformer, Ns>NpN_s>N_p; in a step-down transformer, Ns<NpN_s<N_p.
