A real transformer is never 100% efficient because of several unavoidable energy losses: copper losses, iron (core) losses, and flux leakage, among others.

The main factors that reduce transformer efficiency are:

  1. Copper loss (I²R loss): the primary and secondary windings have some resistance, so current flowing through them dissipates energy as heat (I2RI^2R). This loss increases with load current.
  2. Hysteresis loss: the core material is repeatedly magnetized and demagnetized by the alternating current, and energy is lost as heat in each magnetization cycle due to the core material's hysteresis. Using materials with a narrow hysteresis loop (like soft iron) reduces this loss.
