Since one mitotic cycle doubles the cell count, reaching 1024 cells from a single starting cell requires exactly 10 successive cycles of division.

Mitosis is an equational division: a single parent cell splits into two daughter cells, each identical to the parent in chromosome content. If those daughter cells go on to divide again, and their daughters divide again, and so on, the total number of cells in the resulting tissue doubles with every completed cycle.

Starting from a single cell and doubling repeatedly:

  • After 1 division: 2 cells
  • After 2 divisions: 4 cells
  • After 3 divisions: 8 cells
  • After 4 divisions: 16 cells
  • ...continuing this pattern, the cell count after n divisions is 2 raised to the power n. …
