Mitosis maintains and grows the body of a multicellular organism by making identical cells, while meiosis makes reproduction possible by producing haploid gametes, keeping chromosome number stable across generations, and generating the genetic variation evolution depends on.

Significance of mitosis. Mitosis is generally confined to diploid cells and is significant for several closely related reasons:

  • It produces daughter cells that carry an identical genetic complement to the parent cell, so the two new cells are genetically the same as the one they came from.
  • It underlies the growth of multicellular organisms, since repeated divisions steadily increase the number of cells in the body.
  • It restores the nucleo-cytoplasmic ratio, which gets disturbed as a cell grows larger and the balance between nucleus and cytoplasm shifts — dividing brings this ratio back to a proper level.
  • It is central to cell repair, continually replacing cells that wear out, such as those of the outermost skin layer, the cells lining the gut, and blood cells.
  • In plants specifically, mitotic divisions in meristematic tissues, such as the apical meristems and lateral cambium, allow continuous growth throughout the plant's entire life.

Significance of meiosis. Meiosis carries a significance out of proportion to the simple fact that it halves the chromosome number:

  • It is the mechanism by which each sexually reproducing species preserves its own particular chromosome number across generations — meiosis halves the number while producing gametes, and fertilisation, the fusion of two such gametes, restores it to the full diploid value. Without this halving, the chromosome number would double every generation. …
