A cell that is not dividing has exited the active cycle into the quiescent G0 stage, distinct from the G1, S and G2 phases that a genuinely cycling cell passes through.

Not every cell in the body keeps dividing. Some, such as heart cells, appear never to divide at all, while many other cell types divide only occasionally, stepping in when replacement is needed after injury or normal wear. What happens to such cells is specific: they leave the G1 phase and enter an inactive condition called the quiescent stage, or G0, of the cell cycle.

It helps to be clear about what distinguishes G0 from the other named phases:
