Hashina has the higher mean (53 vs 44.1), so she is more intelligent; Ravi has the lower coefficient of variation (29.49% vs 45.94%), so he is more consistent.

The idea

  • Intelligence → overall performance → compare the mean score (higher is better).
  • Consistency → how little the scores vary → compare the coefficient of variation C.V.=σxˉ×100\text{C.V.}=\dfrac{\sigma}{\bar{x}}\times100 (lower is more consistent). C.V. is the correct measure here because the two students have different means.

Step 1 — Means

xˉR=25+50+45+30+70+42+36+48+35+6010=44110=44.1\bar{x}_R=\frac{25+50+45+30+70+42+36+48+35+60}{10}=\frac{441}{10}=44.1

xˉH=10+70+50+20+95+55+42+60+48+8010=53010=53\bar{x}_H=\frac{10+70+50+20+95+55+42+60+48+80}{10}=\frac{530}{10}=53

Hashina's mean is higher, so Hashina is more intelligent.

Step 2 — Ravi's standard deviation

xix_ixi−xˉRx_i-\bar{x}_R(xi−xˉR)2(x_i-\bar{x}_R)^{2}

σR=1690.9010=169.09≈13.00.\sigma_R=\sqrt{\frac{1690.90}{10}}=\sqrt{169.09}\approx 13.00.

Step 3 — Hashina's standard deviation
