A transformer loses energy mainly through copper loss, hysteresis loss and eddy current loss - each minimised by a specific design choice.

1. Copper loss (I²R loss): heat dissipated in the resistance of the primary and secondary windings, P=I2RP = I^2R. Minimised by winding the coils with thick, low-resistance copper wire.

2. Hysteresis loss: energy lost each cycle in repeatedly magnetising and demagnetising the iron core as the flux reverses direction with the AC. Minimised by using a magnetic core material with a narrow hysteresis loop (a "soft" magnetic material such as silicon steel).
