A test cross reveals an unknown genotype by crossing it with a homozygous recessive partner and reading the offspring ratio.

An individual displaying a dominant trait could be either homozygous dominant (e.g. TT) or heterozygous (Tt) - the phenotype alone cannot distinguish these. To find out, the individual is crossed with a homozygous recessive partner (tt), which by definition can only contribute a recessive allele.
