Amitosis, or direct/incipient cell division, is the simplest pattern of cell division: no spindle apparatus ever forms and the chromatin never condenses into visible chromosomes. It proceeds in two mechanical steps - karyokinesis, in which the nucleus develops a central, dumbbell-shaping constriction that deepens until it splits the nucleus in two, followed by cytokinesis, in which the plasma membrane develops a matching constriction that deepens centripetally until the whole cell is divided. Amitosis is restricted to a few specialised or degenerating cell types, including mammalian cartilage cells, the macronucleus of the ciliate Paramecium, and old, degenerating cells of higher plants.
