Meiosis I's prophase is divided into five sub-stages: leptotene, zygotene, pachytene, diplotene, and diakinesis. At ZYGOTENE, the two homologous chromosomes of each pair (one maternal, one paternal - each already consisting of two sister chromatids after S phase) come together and pair up point-by-point along their length. This precise pairing process is called SYNAPSIS, and it is mediated and stabilised by a ribbon-like proteinaceous structure called the SYNAPTONEMAL COMPLEX that forms between the paired homologs.
