Step 1. Water potential (Ψ) is formally expressed as the sum ΨW = ΨS + ΨP, so the first two parameters controlling it are solute potential and pressure potential.

Step 2. Solute potential (Ψs) reflects the effect of dissolved solutes: adding solute to pure water always lowers its free energy, so solute potential is always negative or, in pure water, zero - the more concentrated the solution, the more negative Ψs becomes.

Step 3. Pressure potential (Ψp) reflects mechanical force acting on the water: in a walled, turgid plant cell this is usually the positive hydrostatic turgor pressure pushing outward against the cell wall, which raises water potential back up; in the xylem, by contrast, pressure potential can be negative, representing the tension generated by transpiration pull. …
