Phyllotaxy refers to the definite, orderly pattern in which leaves are arranged on a stem or branch around successive nodes.

Leaves are always given off from the stem or its branches in a fairly regular, predictable pattern, and this arrangement is called phyllotaxy. There are commonly three main types of phyllotaxy:

  1. Alternate: a single leaf arises at each node, and successive leaves alternate on either side of the stem (e.g., China rose, mustard).

  2. Opposite: a pair of leaves arises at each node, opposite to each other (e.g., Calotropis, guava).
