A typical root, examined longitudinally from the apex (tip) backward, shows the following four regions:
-
Root cap: A thimble-like structure covering and protecting the delicate, actively-dividing root apical meristem as it pushes through the soil; its outer cells are continuously worn away and replaced from within.
-
Region of meristematic activity (region of cell division): Located just behind the root cap, a few millimetres long, consisting of small, thin-walled cells with dense cytoplasm that divide repeatedly, adding new cells to both the root cap and the region above.
-
Region of elongation: Situated just above the meristematic zone; here the newly formed cells increase rapidly in length (elongate), which is the main region responsible for pushing the root tip further into the soil.
