Root climbers hold onto a support with adventitious roots; stem climbers climb using the stem itself, either by twining or via stem tendrils.

Weak-stemmed climbing plants have evolved different structures to hoist themselves up a support, and the two are structurally quite distinct:

Root climbers:

  • Produce adventitious roots at intervals along the stem, typically arising at the nodes.
  • These roots do not absorb water/minerals from the support; instead, they are specialised clinging/climbing organs that grip onto the surface of a wall, tree trunk, or other support (sometimes with adhesive disc-like tips).
