Williamson's Synthesis is a classic method for preparing ethers, particularly useful for making unsymmetrical ethers (where the two alkyl groups are different). It proceeds by reacting an alkoxide ion (from sodium or potassium alkoxide, R-ONa) with an alkyl halide (R'-X):
R-O-Na + R'-X → R-O-R' + NaX
Mechanism: the alkoxide ion (a good nucleophile) attacks the carbon bearing the halogen in an SN2 (bimolecular nucleophilic substitution) reaction, displacing the halide ion and forming the new C-O bond of the ether.
