The postulates (assumptions) of the kinetic theory of gases are:
- A gas consists of a very large number of identical molecules, which behave like perfectly rigid, elastic spheres, identical in all respects for a given gas.
- The size of a molecule is negligibly small compared with the average distance between molecules and the dimensions of the container -- molecules are treated essentially as point masses.
- The molecules are in a state of continuous, random motion, moving in all directions with all possible speeds (randomly distributed).
- The molecules exert no force on one another, or on the walls of the container, except during a collision -- i.e. intermolecular forces are negligible except at the instant of collision.
- Collisions between molecules, and between molecules and the container walls, are perfectly elastic -- kinetic energy is conserved in each collision (though individual molecular speeds may change).
- Between collisions, molecules move in straight lines with uniform velocity (Newton's first law applies).
- The time spent by a molecule during a collision is negligible compared to the time between successive collisions (the time of a free path). …
