Definition: The number of degrees of freedom (f) of a dynamical system is the total number of independent coordinates required to completely specify the position and configuration of the system in space.
Examples used in this course:
- A single point particle (like a monatomic gas molecule, e.g. He, Ar) can move independently along x, y, and z — it has f = 3 (all translational).
- A rigid diatomic molecule (e.g. O2, N2) can translate along x, y, z AND rotate about two axes perpendicular to its own bond axis (rotation about the bond axis itself is not counted, since the moment of inertia there is negligible) — it has f = 5 (3 translational + 2 rotational). …
