Two blocks of different mass, connected by a light inextensible string over a smooth pulley, both move with the same magnitude of acceleration (one going down, the other up); applying F = ma separately to each block and adding the two equations eliminates the unknown tension and gives the acceleration.

Setup: Two blocks of masses m1 and m2 (take m1 > m2) are connected by a light, inextensible string that passes over a smooth (frictionless), massless pulley fixed at the top. Since m1 > m2, block m1 accelerates downward and block m2 accelerates upward, both with the same magnitude of acceleration a (because the string is inextensible), and the tension T in the string is the same throughout (massless, frictionless string/pulley).

For block m1 (moving down, so take downward as positive for this block):

Forces on m1: weight m1g (down), tension T (up).

Newton's second law: m1g − T = m1a ... (1)

For block m2 (moving up, so take upward as positive for this block):

Forces on m2: weight m2g (down), tension T (up).

Newton's second law: T − m2g = m2a ... (2)

Add equations (1) and (2) to eliminate T:

(m1g − T) + (T − m2g) = m1a + m2a

m1g − m2g = (m1 + m2)a …
