SHM is defined by a very specific rule: acceleration ∝ -displacement. This linear restoring tendency is what makes the motion perfectly sinusoidal in time.

Definition: A particle is said to execute Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM) if it moves back and forth about a fixed mean (equilibrium) position such that its acceleration at every instant is:

  1. directly proportional to its displacement (x) from the mean position, and
  2. always directed opposite to the displacement, i.e., toward the mean position (a restoring acceleration).

Mathematically:

a = -ω²x

where ω (a constant for the given system) is the angular frequency of the motion. Equivalently, using Newton's second law, the restoring FORCE is:

F = ma = -mω²x = -kx (k = mω² is the force constant)
