A simple pendulum's period depends on its length and on g, is independent of the bob's mass, and (for small oscillations) is independent of amplitude -- these are its four laws.

For a simple pendulum, the time period is given by T = 2 pi sqrt(l/g), where l is the length of the pendulum and g is the acceleration due to gravity at that place. From this formula follow four laws:

  1. Law of length: For a fixed value of g, the time period T is directly proportional to the square root of the length of the pendulum: T is proportional to sqrt(l).

  2. Law of mass: The time period of a simple pendulum is independent of the mass (and material/density) of the bob -- a heavier or lighter bob of the same length has exactly the same period.

  3. Law of acceleration due to gravity: For a fixed length l, the time period is inversely proportional to the square root of the acceleration due to gravity: T is proportional to 1/sqrt(g). (This is why a pendulum clock runs at a different rate at different places on Earth, or on the Moon.)
