When a body capable of oscillating (like a simple pendulum or a mass on a spring) is displaced from its equilibrium position and then released, it oscillates back and forth under its own restoring force.
If there is no external periodic force acting on it during this motion (and damping/frictional losses are negligible), the body oscillates with a constant amplitude and at a fixed frequency called its natural frequency. This is called free oscillation.
