Think of a sponge as a colony of cells arranged around a system of canals. Water enters through hundreds of tiny pores called ostia, flows through internal chambers, and exits through a larger opening called the osculum. Why pump water? Because sponges are filter feeders. As water moves through, specialised cells called choanocytes (collar cells) trap bacteria and organic particles. The beating of their flagella creates the current. Digestion happens inside these cells — that is, intracellular digestion. The sponge doesn't secrete enzymes into a gut; each choanocyte engulfs and digests its own meal.
