Write the family as y=mxy = mx with one parameter mm, differentiate once to get dydx=m\frac{dy}{dx} = m, and eliminate mm to obtain the first-order equation xdydx=yx\frac{dy}{dx} = y.

Step 1 — Equation of the family. Every straight line through the origin has the form

y=mx,y = mx,

where mm (the slope) is the single arbitrary constant.

Step 2 — Differentiate to bring in the derivative. Since one arbitrary constant is present, differentiate once:

dydx=m.\frac{dy}{dx} = m.
