(a) Classification of Markets on the Basis of Economics (Competition)
On the economic basis of the degree of competition, markets are classified as:
-
Perfect Market – a market with a large number of buyers and sellers dealing in a homogeneous product, with free entry and exit, perfect knowledge and a single uniform price prevailing throughout. (It is largely theoretical/ideal.)
-
Imperfect Market – a market where the conditions of perfect competition are not fully satisfied; it is sub-divided into:
- Monopoly – a single seller controls the entire supply of a product that has no close substitute, and fixes the price.
- Duopoly – only two sellers control the market for a product.
- Oligopoly – a few sellers dominate the market, each keenly watching the others' pricing and policies.
- Monopolistic Competition – many sellers offer differentiated (similar but not identical) products under different brand names, each having some control over price.
(b) How Consumers Are Exploited
Consumers are exploited by traders and producers in many ways:
- Adulteration – mixing inferior or harmful substances with goods (especially food) to raise profit.
- Sub-standard / poor quality goods – selling low-quality goods that do not meet standards.
- Under-weight and under-measurement – using faulty weights and measures to give less than paid for.
- Overcharging / high prices – charging more than the MRP or the fair price. …
