Consumer responsibilities are the practices a buyer is expected to follow so that their legal rights actually function effectively in real transactions, and so that the market as a whole remains disciplined and fair. Unlike rights, these are not backed by legal penalties if ignored, but neglecting them weakens a consumer's own protection; two of the most important responsibilities are discussed below.

The first is being a cautious and alert buyer — comparing quality, price, and terms across sellers rather than simply accepting the first product offered, and specifically checking for recognised quality or safety certification marks (such as the ISI mark, Agmark, Hallmark, or FPO mark, depending on the product) before making a purchase. An alert buyer is far less likely to be deceived by an inferior or unsafe product in the first place.

The second is insisting on a cash memo or bill for every purchase. This is the basic documentary proof of the transaction, and it becomes essential evidence if the consumer later needs to exercise the right to seek redressal — for a replacement, repair, refund, or compensation.
