Step 2. Fuse the concentrated ore with excess sodium carbonate and lime in a reverberatory furnace at 900-1000°C, in air: 4FeCr₂O₄ + 8Na₂CO₃ + 7O₂ → 8Na₂CrO₄ + 2Fe₂O₃ + 8CO₂↑. This gives soluble yellow sodium chromate; treating the roasted mass with water separates it from insoluble Fe₂O₃.
Step 3. Treat the yellow sodium chromate solution with concentrated sulphuric acid: 2Na₂CrO₄ + H₂SO₄ → Na₂Cr₂O₇ + Na₂SO₄ + H₂O, converting yellow chromate to orange-red sodium dichromate. Concentrating the solution crystallises out the less-soluble Na₂SO₄·2H₂O, which is removed. …
