Concept understanding — Fleming's Right Hand Rule

Statement. For a straight conductor physically moving through a magnetic field, Fleming's right hand rule gives a fast mechanical shortcut for the induced current's direction, without working through flux change and Lenz's law explicitly. Hold the thumb, index (fore) finger and middle finger of the right hand mutually perpendicular (like three edges meeting at a box's corner). If the index finger points along the magnetic FIELD, and the thumb points along the conductor's direction of MOTION, then the middle finger automatically points along the direction of the induced CURRENT.

Why 'generator rule'. This exact geometry -- a conductor being mechanically moved through a field -- is precisely the situation inside a real electrical generator's armature, which is why Fleming's right hand rule is also called the generator rule (in contrast to Fleming's LEFT hand rule, used for the force on a current-carrying conductor in a field, correspondingly called the motor rule -- the two rules are easy to confuse, but 'right hand for generators, left hand for motors' distinguishes them). …
