Step 1 (principle). A transformer works on mutual induction: a changing primary current induces an emf in the magnetically-linked secondary coil.

Step 2 (construction). Two coils of high mutual inductance -- primary P (input voltage applied) and secondary S (output drawn) -- are wound on the same laminated core (typically silicon steel), electrically insulated but magnetically linked.

Step 3 (working). With the primary on AC supply, an alternating flux is set up in the core and links both windings equally; the primary back emf is vP=−NP dΦB/dtv_P=-N_P\,d\Phi_B/dt, and the secondary induced emf is vS=−NS dΦB/dtv_S=-N_S\,d\Phi_B/dt.
