India regulates biotechnology products, especially GMOs, through a layered chain of statutory and advisory bodies. The Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC), under the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, currently approves genetically engineered products and monitors their large-scale commercial use; it is assisted by the State Biotechnology Coordination Committee (SBCC) and District Level Committees (DLC), with the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBSC) handling local implementation and the Review Committee on Genetic Manipulation (RCGM) — drawing on the DBT, ICMR, ICAR and CSIR — issuing research permits.
