DNA fingerprinting is widely used in forensic crime investigation and in resolving disputed parentage (paternity/maternity) cases.

DNA fingerprinting relies on the fact that certain highly variable, repetitive regions of DNA (VNTRs) differ between individuals, producing a unique banding pattern (DNA profile) for each person except identical twins. In forensic science, DNA extracted from biological evidence found at a crime scene (blood, semen, hair, skin cells) is compared against the DNA profile of a suspect (or victim), allowing investigators to confirm or rule out their presence at the scene with very high statistical confidence -- helping convict the guilty and clear the innocent.
