Step 1. Eutrophication. When nutrient-carrying run-off from land reaches a water body such as a lake, it triggers dense plant growth. This can happen naturally as a lake ages -- from a clear, low-life oligotrophic stage to a nutrient-richer mesotrophic stage as streams introduce nitrates and phosphates -- or it can be sharply accelerated by human effluent from industries and homes, in which case it is called cultural or accelerated eutrophication.

Step 2. Eutrophication's consequences include clogging of canals, rivers and lakes by algae and water hyacinth, displacement of native plants, foul odour and unsightly foam, and -- critically -- depletion of dissolved oxygen in the water. …
