Stages of waste water treatment:
- Preliminary treatment: raw sewage passes through screens that remove large floating debris (rags, plastics), followed by grit chambers that allow heavier sand/grit to settle out, protecting downstream equipment.
- Primary treatment: the screened water flows into large sedimentation (settling) tanks where suspended solids settle under gravity to form primary sludge; this stage removes roughly 20-30% of the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD).
- Secondary (biological) treatment: the primary effluent is aerated in the presence of aerobic microorganisms (activated-sludge process) or passed over microbial films in trickling filters; the microbes oxidise the dissolved and colloidal organic matter, forming flocs that settle in a secondary clarifier as activated sludge; this stage removes about 90% of the BOD.
- Tertiary/advanced treatment: further polishing removes residual nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus (to prevent eutrophication of receiving water bodies) and disinfects the water by chlorination, UV irradiation or ozonation to kill pathogenic organisms before discharge. …
