Smog is a hazy, harmful air-pollution mixture -- either the classical coal-smoke-and-fog type or the sunlight-driven photochemical type from vehicle exhaust -- that damages respiratory health, visibility, plants and materials.

SMOG (a portmanteau of smoke and fog) is a visible form of air pollution in which fine particulate and gaseous pollutants become trapped in fog or haze, most often over industrial or heavily-trafficked urban areas. Two broad types are recognised. Classical (sulphurous, or reducing) smog forms in cold, humid conditions, typically in winter, when smoke and sulphur dioxide from burning coal combine with fog to produce a thick, greyish haze. Photochemical (oxidising) smog forms instead in warm, sunny, relatively dry conditions, when sunlight drives chemical reactions between nitrogen oxides (NOx) and hydrocarbons released mainly from vehicle exhaust, generating a cocktail of secondary pollutants including ground-level ozone, peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) and aldehydes, producing the characteristic brownish haze seen over many cities. Both types of smog are harmful: they irritate the eyes, nose, throat and airways, aggravate asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory conditions, and can be especially dangerous for children, the elderly and those with pre-existing lun …
