Cloud seeding is artificial rain-making — scattering silver iodide/dry ice/salt into clouds to trigger condensation and rainfall.

Clouds contain water vapour, but for rain to fall the vapour must condense into droplets large enough to fall under gravity. This needs tiny particles (condensation nuclei) around which droplets form. When natural nuclei are insufficient, clouds may not give rain even though they hold moisture.

Cloud seeding is a method of inducing rainfall artificially. Fine particles of a seeding agent are dispersed into moisture-laden clouds, usually sprayed from aircraft flying through the clouds (or fired from the ground). Common seeding agents are:

  • Silver iodide (its crystals resemble ice and start ice/droplet formation),
  • Dry ice (solid carbon dioxide, which cools the cloud), and
  • Common salt / sodium chloride (attracts water, hygroscopic). …
