The mature (Polygonum-type) embryo sac has 7 cells / 8 nuclei — 3 antipodals, a binucleate central cell, and an egg apparatus of 1 egg cell + 2 synergids; the synergids' filiform apparatus guides the pollen tube in.

(A hand-drawn labelled diagram cannot be reproduced in this text-only answer format, but the full structure and labelling are described below, as required in the exam.)

The most common type of mature embryo sac (the Polygonum type) develops from the functional megaspore through three successive free-nuclear mitotic divisions, and at maturity is 7-celled and 8-nucleate, organised as follows:

  • Micropylar end — Egg apparatus (group of 3 cells):
    • 1 egg cell — the female gamete, located centrally.
    • 2 synergid cells, flanking the egg cell. Each synergid has special thickenings at its micropylar tip called the filiform apparatus.
  • Central cell: the large central cell contains 2 polar nuclei, which later fuse (or fuse with a male gamete) to give rise to the primary endosperm nucleus (triple fusion).
  • Chalazal end — Antipodal cells: 3 antipodal cells, located at the end opposite the micropyle; they eventually degenerate and have no defined role in most plants.
