Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) is defined as the amount of dissolved oxygen required by microorganisms (mainly aerobic bacteria) to biochemically oxidize/decompose the organic matter present in a given volume of a water sample, under aerobic conditions, typically measured over a period of 5 days at 20°C, and expressed in mg/L (ppm).
